UK MPs Back Renaming Big Ben Regardless of Oppositions

'Forty MPs have signed a letter to show their support of a controversial plan to rename one of London’s most famous landmarks, the tower housing Big Ben, as the Queen Elizabeth Tower, irrespective of UK public oppositions.

In a formal letter, the majority of British lawmakers lent their support to the plan to rename the tower to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the 60th anniversary of her ascension to the British throne.

However, a YouGov poll, which was released on May 2, 2012, showed that nearly half of Britons condemn the British lawmakers’ plan to rename the tower housing Big Ben after the UK Queen.'

Egyptians Hold Demonstrations Against Mubarak PM’s Bid for Presidency

'Thousands of protesters held rallies in cities across Egypt on Friday to voice opposition to the idea of having a remnant of the former regime as their first post-revolution president, the Associated Press reported. 

Shafiq served as the prime minister during the last days of the country’s former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, before he was toppled by a popular revolt in February 2011.

In the largest gathering on Friday, at least 7,000 people demonstrated in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. Many carried Egyptian flags while others were holding their shoes in the air in a show of protest against the Mubarak ally.'
