Max Planck Institute For Meteorology: “Prognoses Confirm
Model Forecasts” Warming Postponed “Hundreds Of Years”
By P Gosselin on 26. Mai 2013
Now that global temperatures have not risen in 15 years, a
number of scientists find themselves having great difficulty coming to terms
with that new reality
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg is no
exception. For years the institute insisted that the man-made climate
catastrophe was real and happening now. Today it finds itself scrambling for a
backdoor. “Otto et al” is that back door.
The MPI-M recently issued a
press release with interesting revelations about the now famous “Otto et
al” paper, to which its two directors contributed.
When we read the MPI-M press release, we quickly discover that this Otto et
al paper is actually just the latest in speculative crystal-ballwork - the
results have little value other than to provide a desperately needed
face-saving opportunity for accepting a lower CO2 climate
sensitivity.
The problem that climate science is having today is that it finds itself
clashing with the fundamental rule of science itself. Richard Feynman once said on
how science works:
1. Guess
2. Compute consequences
3. Compare to actual observations
If it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong. That simple statement is the
key to science. It doesn’t make a difference how beautiful your guess is. It
doesn’t make difference how smart you are, the person who made the guess, or
what his name is. If it disagrees with experiment, then it’s wrong. That’s all
there is to it.”
Today we know that warming has stopped, and so that means the computed
climate consequences are in disagreement with the observations, thus showing
that the MPI-M’s earlier “guess” is wrong. Do they accept that today?
No. The MPI-M refuses to admit that “the guess” is wrong. What it does
instead that it redefines the scientific approach used in the Otto et al study
and in its press release. For the MPI-M the new rule of science is:
1. Guess
2. Compute consequences (with computers)
3. Compare to other newly computed consequences
And you keep computing new consequences until you get
agreement! This is what the 2 scientists at the Max Plank Institute together
with the team of scientists led by Otto have done, and nothing more.

Can we really trust chief scientific officers?
The Times del 11/01/2010 , articolo di Ross Clark
I have an idea how officials could try to get rid of 60
million unwanted doses of swine flu vaccine: put them on eBay with the words
"will exchange for a very large pile of grit".
What a week it has been for scientific embarrassments. First
we have had the spectacle of the Met Office trying to wriggle out of its
prediction of a mild winter, and now the Government's admission that swine flu,
after all, isn't going to lay waste to the country. In fact, forget the 65,000
deaths predicted last July to result from swine flu; by December 31 just 203
with swine flu had died - and many of these were people who were already
mortally ill.
It is just ten weeks since Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief
Medical Officer, was warning the country to ignore the "extremists"
who, he said, were trying to undermine the vaccination programme. Given that a
few days earlier I had been debating with Sir Liam on Radio 5 the merits of
being vaccinated, I can only imagine that I was one of the extremists he had in
mind. Though he didn't quite say it, one could sense in his voice that he
didn't consider a pipsqueak such as me, without even a biology O level,
qualified to speak on the subject.
True, I don't know a lot about virology, but I know enough
about human nature to treat a scientist's word with the scepticism it deserves.
I also happen to remember that Sir Liam had previously made grim prophecies
about bird flu - which he predicted in 2005 could cause 50,000, and possibly as
many 750,000, deaths in the UK. The disease never killed a soul in Britain.
Remember the Sars scare of 2003 and vCJD, the human form of mad cow disease,
which a team from Oxford estimated would eventually kill 136,000 people? The
tally so far is 162.
There was a time when, if you read a scientific scare story,
you tended to put it down to the over-active imagination of a redtop
journalist. No longer: nowadays it is outwardly sober government scientists who
spin the biggest scares. They know they can get away with it because laymen
have an irrational respect for words uttered by scientists.
That much was proved by the 1963 Milgram experiment in which
the Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram persuaded volunteers to administer a -
simulated - potentially fatal electric shock to another human being when
instructed to do so by a man in a white lab coat.
It will be a good 50 years before anyone can make a
definitive judgment on the biggest scientific scare of our times: climate
change. But I can't read the latest prediction for man-made flood and tempest
without thinking of all those millions who have failed to die from swine flu
and the other grim fates predicted by government scientists.

Andrew

perversion not only of The Royal Society but of science itself, wherein the
legitimate role of science as a powerful mode of inquiry is replaced by the
pretence of science to a position of political authority.
