EU BRIEF.
Majority of Irish voters happy with Lisbon No vote result
The Irish Times reports on a poll released yesterday, conducted the day after the Irish Lisbon Treaty referendum, which has found that the majority of the Irish public are happy with the result of the Lisbon Treaty referendum, including one in 10 of those who voted Yes. Fifty-four per cent of those polled said they were happy with the result, while 34 per cent were unhappy, and 11 per cent were undecided. The paper notes that the "poll holds some disturbing findings for the Government", including the fact that nine per cent of those who voted Yes in the referendum say they are now happy with the result. Behaviour Attitudes, the firm that conducted the poll, said that this suggests that the Yes voters' support "was rather 'soft' to begin with".
According to the Irish Independent, the Irish government is to set up a Lisbon committee, expected to have around nine members. The committee will hear from groups on both side of the Lisbon argument about how to proceed.
The Economist notes that "Mr Cowen is playing for time. But a deteriorating economy is making cuts in public spending unavoidable, so he seems sure to become more unpopular... would a second referendum held by the autumn of next year be any more winnable? So far Mr Cowen looks less of a political visionary who sees a way out of the Lisbon impasse, and more like Mr Micawber, desperately hoping for something to turn up."

Glasgow East
Glasgow East
The following details are from the BBC ONLINE, BUT I HAVE ADDED the
(2005 figures) for the main results
SNP candidate John Mason has won the Glasgow East by-election with a
22.54% swing from Labour. Here is the result in full:
John Mason, SNP - 11,277 (5268)
Margaret Curran, Labour - 10,912 (18775)
Davena Rankin, Conservative - 1,639 (2135)
Ian Robertson, Lib Dem - 915 (3665)
Frances Curran, Scottish Socialist Party - 555 (1096)
Tricia McLeish, Solidarity - 512 (-)
Dr Eileen Duke, Scottish Greens - 232 (-)
Chris Creighton, Independent - 67 (-)
Hamish Howitt, Freedom 4 Choice - 65 (-)
Turnout 42.25% (43.77%)
One can't help wondering if the SSP's Curran didn't get some votes
intended for Labour? But one way or another this was a fairly
straight switch from Labour to SNP!

Compares what Barack Hussein Obama says while running for President to what he actually wrote in his book "Audacity of Hope".
Senator Obama is a Racist, a Liar and an Anti Semite - ACCORDING TO THIS VIDEO.
From the Walid Shoebat Foundation
Friends
Many of us have watched the flip flopping of Senator Obama, the
frenzied "victory parade" in Europe. The world is falling for this wicked man
of deception and lies. Taqaiya is in full force.
Obama claimed not to have heard the sermons of Rev Wright and then as
the heat came on he threw his friend Rev Wright to the wolves.
If one reads Senator Obama's book The Audacity of Hope inspired by his
former Pastor, it is very clear that the junior Senator from Illinois
shares every single view that Rev Wright does and uses some exact
analogies used in Rev Wright's speechs.
The great Democratic party of JFK, Roosevelt, Truman has been deceived
by this wicked politician. Hitler was a good speaker and charismatic.
Hitler was also elected by democracy and even some Jews voted for him.
Watch this important You Tube video as it brilliantly analyzes and
compares what Barack Hussein Obama says running for President to what he
actually wrote in his book "Audacity of Hope"

On July 21, 2008, Pakistan's independent television network Geo News aired an exclusive interview with Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid, Al-Qaeda's No. 3 man and top commander in Afghanistan. The interview, conducted in Arabic, was broadcast on Geo News with a voiceover in Urdu. It was later posted on Islamist websites, and its content was published in Pakistani newspapers.
Abu Al-Yazid, also known as Sheikh Sa'id, is a 52-year-old Egyptian with two wives and 14 children. In 1981 he was arrested in Egypt for involvement in the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Al-Sadat, but was released a year later. In 1988, after heading various militant groups, he joined Al-Qaeda and shifted his base of operations to Afghanistan. In 1991 he worked for Osama bin Laden in Sudan as an accountant, and later became director of Al-Qaeda's financial affairs. He has also been a member of Al-Qaeda's Shura Council, in charge of financial planning, organizational affairs, and public relations.(1)

Iran, Israel, and the risk of war, Paul Rogers...
The prospect of war over Iran's nuclear plans seemed to recede in mid-July 2008 after a marked change in United States attitudes to the country. This was signalled by the decision to hold direct talks with the Islamic Republic for the first time since the revolution of 1979 and the subsequent hostage crisis that did so much to embitter relations between the two countries. The outcome of the discussions held in Paris on 19 July was disappointing to western hopes of concessions from Iran over...

Bulgaria is the newest, poorest and probably the worst governed member of the European Union. Its economy is growing, its politics is collapsing and its public is totally frustrated. Dubai's Oil Boom Financial Centre Heading for Bust?
Stock-Markets / Middle East.

Martin Hutchinson writes: Dubai has plenty of qualities that catch an investor's eye.
The emirate has the world's only (self-proclaimed) 7-star hotel.
Dubai also is home to the biggest financial market in the Middle East, which is itself publicly quoted and trades at 25 times forecast 2008 earnings.
It has been enjoying one of the greatest construction booms the world has ever seen.
And Dubai is planning a huge tourist expansion, aiming to boost that sector to more than the 18% of the economy it already accounts for.
So, why aren't Dubai investments a screaming buy, where we should all be investing our money? After all, plenty of brokers think it's just that.
From a short-term perspective, Dubai investments haven't done too badly. The Dubai Financial Market General Index is down about 13% this year, far less than the much-hyped emerging markets of India and China, or even the United States.
But there's a possible catch.
