BROWN NOT QUITE THE FULL MONTY
For a man who has a PhD in history, Gordon Brown has made a quite
remarkable gaffe.
In the transcript of the speech to troops in Afghanistan he made last
week, it says: "Some of you may have heard of Field Marshal
Montgomery and at the battle of Allemagne, just before it, in the
Second World War, he spoke to his troops."
The Prime Minister is clearly referring to the famous Battle of El
Alamein in Egypt, of which there were two phases, in 1942.
Quite why he uses the French word for Germany is anyone's guess, not
to mention his rather patronising assumption that British forces
might not know who "Monty" was.
A new speech writer and some history books are obviously needed at
No10.

EU sheep tagging plans a ‘disaster’
ELECTRONIC identification of sheep could be as disastrous to Welsh
farming as bluetongue and bovine TB, industry leaders believe. - - -
It is estimated that EID cost farmers £6 per head in the first year,
knocking about 40% off their incomes overnight - - - - - the issue
would not only be catastrophic for Welsh sheep farmers, it could also
have knock-on effects on tourism and the wider rural economy. “It
could lead to land abandonment in some of Wales’ most sensitive areas
as the industry plays a vital role in maintaining our
landscape,” (Daily Post (N.Wales ) 21/8/08)
