Normal Courtesies Lost on Brussels Socialists.

August 11th, 2008

E-mail to Martin Schultz, MEP, German leader of the Socialists in the European Parliament :

I still await an answer to my emails of 19 and 25 June. [see below]

Must I deduce that personal messages to you are not only leaked to the media but are also ignored?

Do socialists not subscribe to the normal courtesies of life?

E-mail of 19 June:

I must protest at the attempts your members made today to shout me down throughout my one minute speech in the debate on the Irish vote. I also deplore the failure of the president to ask for order, which is the norm in plenary.

It was a disgraceful display of discourtesy. Whilst I quite accept that politics has an element of rough and tumble, and people do from time to time interject during a speech, your group’s behaviour this morning went too far.

It became impossible for me to complete my brief speech, or to hear what was being shouted. I heard merely an uproar. But others tell me the shouting was essentially about my court case. If so that is even more deplorable.

My case is still subject to due legal process in the UK and no assumptions can be made as to the final outcome. My website has a full statement on the current position.

I trust you will take whatever steps are necessary to make this clear to your members.

An apology would not go amiss, either.

E-mail of 25 June:

I learn from the Guardian newspaper that you have chosen to make my PERSONAL message to you of 19 June public. Meanwhile, I have not had the courtesy of a reply from you, let alone an acknowledgement.

I should also remind you that my court case is still the subject of an appeal against conviction and to that extent it is sub judice.

Your reply to my original message, attached, is awaited
