promoted to Foreign Secretary; Lose all the records all
over the place continually and (correct me if I'm wrong, somebody,
please) only one person has resigned or been sacked; Start another
F&M outbreak by cutting the hygiene budget and get made prime minister.

And now here's a real sickener - move a failure from the job he's
wrecked but promote him to a bigger one!

What next for Callum McCarthy, who chaired the Financial Services
Authority (FSA) while it systematically failed to regulate Northern
Rock, allowing the Bank to borrow too much until it nearly went bust?

McCarthy is stepping down from the financial regulator, and
Chancellor has found the perfect new job for him: as a non-executive
director of The Treasury itself.

Having been in charge when Northern Rock imploded, he can now be
first on the scene when the entire economy collapses.
