Erekat to Livni: Jerusalem, or No Deal

(IsraelNN.com) Senior Palestinian Authority negotiator Saeb Erekat sent a strongly worded message to newly-elected Kadima head Tzipi Livni on Thursday night letting her know that the PA is not ready to compromise. “The only road to peace... goes through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with eastern Jerusalem as defined by the borders of June 4, 1967 as its capital,” he said.
Erekat made his remarks at a festive meal marking the end of the day's Ramadan fast in the Israeli Arab city of Sakhnin. The meal was sponsored by the Israeli Arab Ra'am Ta'al party and headed by MK Ahmed Tibi. Erekat's speech came shortly after Livni met with Shas head Eli Yishai. Shas has warned that it will not join a coalition with Livni unless she promises not to give the PA control over any part of Jerusalem.

(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas has named a new governor of Jerusalem, a symbolic move. He appointed Adnan Husseini, a member of the family that was among leaders in the city during the British Mandate.

"The appointment is meant to refocus attention on Jerusalem and comes in response to Israel's measures in the occupied city, which we and the rest of the world consider illegal," senior Abbas aide Nimer Hammad told Reuters. His office is restricted to religious activities, and Israeli police have reminded the PA not to conduct political activity in the capital
