MARKING THE LULLABY OF LIES

The world into which we were born has already been mostly extinguished. To adapt Hamlet’s remark: “Before I could make a prologue to my brains, they had begun their play;” not only begun but largely completed it. The world has been federated and collectivized by destroying education and lies are imposed as truths. As to the second quote above, we live in the postscript of the Gothicism that became trendy in England by 1790, an aesthetic, politics, law and culture of terror that chatters obsessively about the happiness its programs are destroying. Fantasies of instant salvation come home to roost as damnable lies and impenetrable labyrinths of fix-it schemes.
In an essay a decade ago I examined our culture’s dominant institutions and discussed how they wreck and impoverish rather than sustain and nurture their subjects. Their routine functioning erodes culture and wastes lives. Seeking a phrase to capture this murderous and paradoxical process, I wrote that as it grows more unjust, a culture lives by the official lies it tells itself and teaches or imposes on its people that make its injustice look like “equity,” its ferocity, compassion, that terms its diminishing batch of permitted opinions, “diversity;” its oppressive and pitiless prejudices, “tolerance,” and so on. The culture, that is, lives on death: it negates itself. To the commissars of “the new science of degradation,” a scream produced by torture is “the tone of truth” because it emphasizes their power. The song of a cynical cult of power is a lullaby of lies.
Such a culture’s “life-giving illusions” are dogmas that do not give but destroy life, and not by chance or mistake, but by intention.[4] The ways of being by which many of us were raised are being scattered like antelope before packs of wolves, herded like sheep to the slaughter. “Family law” has the same relation to family as abortion does to birth but protracted torturously over time, extending its damage through generations. We know that “spectacles of cruelty corrupt the hearts of the innocent” and have grieved for decades, especially for children, over the depravity, insincerity, and glib personae of “commentators” who look more prosperous and smug as culture disintegrates, talking heads and Hollywood-trash that, serving the new masters, degrade people into reacting rather than thinking -- into responding reflexively to stimuli or slogans, like beasts.[5]
The economic crisis is instructive, by design; it is meant to teach Americans a lesson though not about economics. It comes, after decades of shocks to value, tradition, belief, history to teach via pain and fear that most of us have very little power. The masters of “the new science of degradation,” having beaten down social relationships based on the wisdom and teachings of millennia are hastening to “kill people on their knees” now that we have been “confused and disgraced in [our] own eyes,” -- who has not been degraded and confused by the ugliness, lies and incoherence of the various “British invasions” of the past five decades, by feminism, the Gramscian communism and Fabian socialism that preceded and opened a wedge for it, building toward the “world collective” and “the synthesis of Russia and America, communism and capitalism” that is its goal, a kind of global androgyne, massive, sterile, enraged and aggressive.[6]
An individual, a family, a nation is pushed to this level not to learn about economics, the EU, Islam, or history but to absorb through shock and awe “that a body can entertain notions of justice only so long as it is whole”; our institutions put us in cells of confusion and loneliness “to show us the meaning of humanity” at its most vulnerable and basic. In this way, our masters, and mistresses can teach and are teaching us a great deal.[7] Now that the meaning and means of justice, the soul, the Creator and creation have been mocked and dispersed, now that families and hearts are broken and vulnerabilities exposed we learn truths of pain and power. The mighty know that a body and spirit in pain and terror will cry out for salvation and that even those willing to live with very little, and able to absorb much damage still mostly want to live. How much more so those focused on a high quality of life: what lies will they not tell themselves, and impose on others to make things stay the way they are, for them, or go back to the way they were?
“It is an article of faith” with the new barbarians and their “science of degradation” that “the last truth is told only in the last extremity”: to them screaming anguish is “the tone of truth” that comes after the last breaking of identity or life. They seek a world so cold and cruel that as Alice Bailey wrote, “death is a cure;” “mental healers” will teach this to us as part of “the new trend of the human family.” This “creative destruction” is the “bridging work” of “initiates” (those who own and staff, our media, foundations, global harmony groups) that help the Hierarchy attain “the age of synthesis and light” on the other side of the collapses we currently undergo;[8] to live in their new “city of God” when they have again destroyed the original and stamped their arrogant mark on it.
An apocalyptic Shi’ite Iran is a major helper in this dialectic bridging work by which it assists in forging an “alliance of civilizations” a “cult of the powerful State” on a global scale. Without public schools education might occur and this nexus of degradation slow greatly. Youth will learn to think again; learn to see and see through not merely stare at and align themselves with the axes of power that are the only truth of the last age.
Pervasive degradation, lying and the lust for power define our times. Those who are shrewd and cowardly, dominated by the will to survive above all else, who “preach that morality means the imposition of the will” know that the religion of our time is prostitution: they sense their cue and put out smugly and gleefully. The less intelligent or sensitive or perhaps one should say, the de-sensitized, and there are more and more of all of these, go to their whoredom mindlessly; to them mouthing slogans is as natural as seeking truth and resisting is for the increasingly few; or perhaps one should write, for the mostly unheard majority. “The event will show,” as Shakespeare wrote; we will see.
Largely through the mass media, the basis and most pernicious of the eruptions of the modern world, de-sensitization, programming, over-stimulation, and degradation grow. Quite apart from the disingenuous or unreal content, the “virtual” quality that more and more displaces life or makes life itself seem unreal, the media teach us to hurry, that nothing lasts; it distracts us. It levels all comment, all “issues;” in this terrible effacement of boundaries and the ability to discriminate, the medium truly is the message, the teaching of ignorance and wearing a mask, the confusion of shadow and being. “This perpetual broadcasting…is a sign of cultural backwardness and mental laziness,” an imposition of forgetting, of programming in both senses.[9] It began in “the intellectual organization of political hatreds” but eighty years later, following the reductive process of a lie there remains nothing but the organization of hatreds and the closing of all exits as the red and blue teams merge into insolvent sludge and the tricky double-meanings of “divided we fail...”
To the extent that it is unjust, a culture constructs itself of official lies that serve as dogma. These lies are a ‘distraction machine’ to continually deflect thoughts, words or deeds that might shatter illusions and allow a purposeful question to be asked or partly answered. “Fascist,” “liberal,” “government bail-outs,” “enemies of the people,” “sexists” are a few of the indictment-slogans that bury truth and thought, “fallacies that enmesh man because he has become used to employing phrases and terms that defy logic.”[10] A culture of cruelty works by magic, a culture of magic always is cruel; a culture whose social relations or ideology cannot and will not look soberly at or entertain life’s wonder and simplicity. It is a vast deflection machine that buries the health of truth, history and memory because it cannot look at the dignity, capability and responsibility of human beings as they are (psalm 104) but always must be transforming what is into what is not in a perpetual shell-game that buries conscience and consciousness in ever-cheapening communal rapture: ‘what the world wants today.’ Its theme song might as well be, “do you believe in magic” and if you don’t, you must be buried, labeled as “socially harmful…a socially dangerous element,” a kulak, a ‘right-wing conspiracy nut,’ a proponent of the second amendment, a male chauvinist pig, etc. Then “they won’t accept you for qualified work anywhere” for they hold any unorthodox word or thought against you and soon, “you will live in a hovel.”[11] For discarded fathers it has been like this for three decades: how many have noticed or done anything while the Constitution and all that is most basic and sustaining in human life was shredded? The “Insurrection Act of 1807” should have been used to enforce the basic rights that the states refused to uphold, that they in fact destroyed. Instead the army was used at Waco and soon… In academia it has been like this for twenty-five years since the surge of Dionysian feminists and their male pamps silenced thought and dissent. Many complained but who did anything for those who were suppressed, expelled, barred from work in education, the most essential to perpetuating a humane society? The scores of millions poured onto the sands of the Paul campaign could have launched and maintained scores of Charter schools to teach the classics and liberal arts: too late. Will you be fooled again?
Instead of educated youth we have a nation that “habitually employs phrases and terms that defy logic” and produces reflexive, bestial responses; when the pertinent pc slogans are emitted the ‘johns’ step up and pay the whore to wrap them in chains. The horror in this culture of lies and death magic is stated clearly by a great poet:
In this, our age of infamy,
Man’s choice is but to be
A tyrant, traitor, prisoner;
No other choice has he.
The tyrants are the owners of the media, the officers of major institutions and corporations, public, private and hybrid; the boards of directors who glide away on golden parachutes reckoned in the tens or scores of millions; dictators and their inner circles in all States of this age of infamy. But do not exclude the degraded people who believe their lies, who have surrendered out of sloth or selfishness and let the sludge wash over them year after year, decade after decade: who let “medical insurance” become a synonym for the practice of medicine; who believe that education and medical care can or should be “free” (someone else will pay; the “government” will pay). Such a people will accept the ‘exiling’ of more and more of those with reasoned dissenting views, will accept the evisceration and dumbing-down of the curriculum to the current, long-building “precipitous decline in classical Literature and the Humanities;” will accept and repeat the slogans that defy logic and turn our precious nation and world into a horror ruled by “the new cult of success and contempt for misfortune” in strong State “contemptuous of justice” which it has redefined peace and wellbeing as “security” whose long recession measures the depth of the lies enwrapping us.[12]
Turn it off, study, break “the mind-forged manacles”; one’s money, taken as taxes is used to bind one in a thickening web. “The see ye sow another reaps;/ the wealth you earn, another keeps.”[13]
The impoverishing ‘security’ of health insurance morphs into rationed care leading to refusal of care in the name of “quality of life” for “useless eaters.” “Free” health care is paid by some of the people, filtered through a massive bureaucracy and then disbursed to doctors by cashiers, rather than letting one pay a doctor directly only when he or she or his family needs care. I remember when Doctors made “house calls” in the evening after putting in an eleven-hour day. It was not so long ago: JFK was president, it cost seven dollars and no one was refused care; but now, with “public health services” medical care is not free (except for illegal immigrants) “it’s just depersonalized”[14] Unless you join and shill for the masters, you already have been pushed half off the train. Hence the pressure to lie, betray and deny increases, to mouth and absorb slogans that defy logic, the “idols of the marketplace” worshipped with preemptive cringing by people being reduced by fear to beasts.
Fear indeed: Wells argued that “there is scarcely a city in the world that does not need to have half its dwellings destroyed.” To accomplish this task, to which the emergence of “a new world money, a specially contrived money” will conduce, “there must be a multitude of young and youngish people who have been infected by this idea of cleaning up and re-settling the world.” The media massage coordinated with the edu-psy-pharma & law complex sets this “infection” and there are no more family doctors or educators to heal the disease though, just as Wells did, the “idols of the marketplace” will continue chirping about “a world in extreme need of more and inspiring teachers... for a world struggling through federation toward collective unity.”[15]
There is another aspect to what we have lost, besides our earnings that buffer us from poverty, and being treated like “useless eaters” who have “lives unworthy of being lived.” Education has destroyed mentoring by those worthy of the name in exchange for dogmas like “the community is the content” and asking children to explain their “feelings” after they do something wrong or “scary.” A culture of infantilized living-machines habituated to responding thoughtlessly to stimuli may be readily managed.
“We have lost the family doctor…a disinterested, kind and stern doctor who warns youth against harmful missteps and harms to their bodies” so that “their whole picture of the world is cleansed and falls into place…the family doctor, the most comforting figure in our lives has been cut down” along with fathers and without them “the family cannot exist in modern society.”[16]

The cozy utopian theorist, Wells, flush with lust for power he promotes as “liberal” claims that “world-wide collectivization…is the only alternative to complete degeneration of our species.” Solzhenitsyn, who lived through and wrote several books describing the imposition of such a system reversed the lie, - collectivization degrades human beings. If Wells could not imagine or tolerate waiting days on line for a railway ticket, Solzhenitsyn spoke from experience and comments, “a man sprouts a tumor and dies. How then can a country live that has sprouted [detention] camps and [internal] exile?”[17]
As new disasters are created and we are stampeded toward prefab corrals I suspend this discussion of terror and the lullaby of lies till another day. In the interim, people must break down the pc idols of the marketplace and preempt its pre-set outcomes lest magic, madness and cruelty sear “the tissues of the heart God gave us for joy.”[18]

Eugene Narrett received his BA, MA and PhD from Columbia University in NYC. His writings on American politics and culture and on the Middle East and geopolitics have been widely published.
