Police Recommend Olmert Stand Trial

Israel Police have recommended that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert be indicted on corruption charges relating to two cases that have been under investigation for months, after determining that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute him.

The dramatic turn of events culminate months of political turmoil and forced Olmert to announce his intentions to step down following the Kadima primaries scheduled to take place later this month. After examining the evidence and discussing their findings for over five hours on Sunday , police unanimously recommended Olmert’s indictment and will hand over their findings to Attorney General Menachem Mazouz for review.

Charges against Olmert include bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The cases in question relate to suspicions that Olmert illegally accepted sums of money from American businessman Morris Talansky over a course of 15 years. Talansky who appeared in court in Jerusalem several times, admitted handing over envelopes of cash to Olmert’s former bureau chief and that he also upgraded Olmert’s flights and hotel accommodation abroad. The sums of money allegedly relate to tens of thousands of dollars, in addition to allegations that Talansky gave Olmert the sum of $200,000 to cover debts from his 1988 Jerusalem mayoral campaign.

In addition police also suspect that Olmert sent bills to a number of non profit organizations for trips abroad to raise money for them and allegedly billed each organization for full flight fares. Extra funds went into a special account managed by Olmert’s travel agency Rishon Tours , who used the funds to pay for Olmert’s trips and those of family members abroad

According to media reports Olmert’s former bureau head Shula Zaken and his lawyer Uri Messer who acted on Olmert’s behalf will also be indicted on a number of counts including conflict of interest, breach of trust and fraud.

Regarding the Investment Center probe, police intend to question Olmert again before making any recommendations on the matter.Since last Thursday , Commander Yohanan Danino head of the police investigations and intelligence unit,Yoav Segalovich head of the Lahav 433 unit and National Fraud Unit head Shlomi Ayalon conducted a number of meetings to review the evidence compiled after months of police investigations.

Olmert’s battery of lawyers responded to events calling them meaningless and declared that the only person who has the authority to indict a Prime Minister is the Attorney General.

Just weeks ago Olmert announced at a late night press conference that in the event the Attorney General decides to press charges against him he will step down. Olmert admitted to receiving contributions from Talansky, funds which he described were election campaign donations and not bribes. Olmert vehemently denied claims that he had pocketed sums of money for his own use and stared at the cameras and declared Ï am looking you straight in the eyes when I declare that at no time whatsoever did I ever take any money for my own personal use."

Olmert said his lawyer Messer was in charge of handling the funds that were donated by Talansky. Olmert also took the opportunity at the press conference to accuse the "self righteous justice seekers,"and those responsible for directing malicious accusations at him and his family. As Prime Minister, he said he is responsible for all decision but throughout his term as Premier had been forced to contend with malicious gossip.
