The return of the Dark Lord

Until today, I thought this Labour government no longer had the capacity to shock me. How wrong I was. The return of Peter Mandelson to the Cabinet made me fall off my chair. It’s not just that it shows Brown is so desperate to rescue New Labour from disaster that he calls upon his deadliest enemy for help – and also demonstrates that, far from exulting in Brown’s parlous state, the Blairites grasp that it’s all hands to the Labour pump to stave off the impending electoral rout by the Tories. It’s not just that, by bringing in such a political retread, it’s backwards to the future -- or should that be forwards to the past -- and thus maladroitly hands the Tories such a gift by bringing back the politician who, more than anyone else, is identified...

Survival isn't enough

Once again, Sarah Palin has made the sneerocracy look ridiculous. Before her debate last night against Joe Biden, the chatterati were salivating at the prospect of Palin’s knock-out humiliation. The Times quoted Mrs Thatcher’s former image adviser Tim Bell:

I don't think any amount of preparation could help Palin; it's going to be bloody.

Au contraire; she danced round Biden like a matador sticking her knives into a clapped-out old bull -- who was clearly seriously constrained by the terror of making yet another of his jaw-dropping gaffes which appear to have passed the media by. Palin’s talent, and it is considerable, is to appeal over the heads of her media tormentors and speak directly into the camera and straight to Middle America which sees her as one of their own.
