The Government was alerted to the possibility of
Icelandic banks facing collapse in July but chose to ignore the warning, it
has

Oakeshott, a Liberal Democrat, and Michael Fallon, a Tory MP, raised the issue

with ministers on separate occasions, but were reassured savers would be
protected by law. Lord Oakeshott, a pension fund manager and former director
of
Warburg Investment Management, raised the alarm in written questions more than

two months ago, while Mr Fallon had asked how much money was in the
compensation
fund, after press reports that there was a shortfall. Lord Oakeshott said:
