Whichever way this American election ends, it will surely be remembered as the one in which big media threw aside all pretence of objectivity and flung itself into the campaign as committed partisans for Obama. I have been documenting on this blog some of its more egregious acts of commission and omission – the double standards in the treatment of the two opposing sides, and above all the almost total silence over, or even endorsement of, aspects of Obama’s background, attitudes and associations, the exposure of any one of which would have surely sunk a white Republican candidacy in five seconds flat.Sunday, 5th October 2008

The papers today are full of conflicting accounts of the precise circumstances of the abrupt departure of Sir Ian Blair from the Met after his ‘routine’ meeting last Wednesday with Mayor Boris, Deputy Mayor for policing Kit Malthouse and Catherine Crawford, Chief Executive of the Metropolitan Police Authority. Boris has said that after telling Sir Ian that he wanted him gone, the decision to resign was Sir Ian’s alone. Sir Ian is reported as saying that Boris left him no choice and he was therefore sacked. There is also a great hue and cry in certain quarters that Boris has ‘politicised the police’ by prompting Sir Ian’s departure in this way. MPA members think they should have been consulted.
