Letter to the editor of the Farnham Herald

Editor: Farnham Herald,

Sir

The prospective Tory candidate for East Hants, Damian Hinds, has just issued a newsletter claiming that a Tory government will scrap Home Information Packs if they win the next election.

He omits to mention that this would be possible only if the UK withdraws from the European Union.

HIPs are a requirement imposed on the British by Brussels bureaucrats who seem to think that our centuries-old system of caveat emptor is not good enough any more.

Sir

Whilst I appreciate you will not want correspondence between political opponents to run on too long in your columns, I must respond to last week’s letter from Damian Hinds about HIPs being a Tory target for repeal. If only.

He concedes however that the Tories cannot repeal directive 2002/91 on energy performance (the cornerstone on which HIPs were built) and then goes on to praise energy certification as an important part of the Tory plan to cut carbon emissions.

Allow me to quote the words of a sitting Tory MEP who has made a special study of alleged climate change and carbon emissions: “CO2 is essential for life on earth. Without it plants would die and we should die too. Higher atmospheric CO2 leads directly to faster plant growth and higher crop yields, as the biosphere absorbs more CO2. Man-made CO2 emissions are a tiny fraction of the natural carbon cycle…and much less significant than water vapour.”

The Tories may be about to win power, but they still have a lot of thinking to do - about our membership of the EU and supposed climate change.
