John McCain has conceded defeat. According to partial results, the Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama carried 51 percent of the vote (40,339,687) and 338 electors compared with McCain’s 48 percent (37,866,221) and 155 electors in 46 states.

McCain urged all Americans to offer their goodwill and support for the new president. President Bush was first to congratulate him.

The president-elect, his wife and daughters were greeted by a hysterical crowd of 100,000 supporters waiting at Chicago’s Grant Park for his victory speech. This election result shows America is a place where all things are possible, he said.

The Democrats added 8 to their House majority and four more senators.

No one was hurt in 45-missile blitz but Israel’s emergency services in Ashkelon, Sderot, Netivot and the villages around Gaza are on the ready for further attacks.

The Palestinian barrage, which coincided with Barack Obama’s victory rally in Chicago, followed a battle that erupted Tuesday night when an Israeli armored force crossed 250 meters deep into the Gaza Strip to demolish a Hamas tunnel dug from Al Bureij the Israel military position at the Kissufim border to faciliate abducting more soldiers. Four IDF soldiers were injured, 2 moderately, 2 lightly in the first Israeli incursion of Gaza since the June truce.

The United States’ longest presidential campaign ever was hard fought up to the last minute by Senators Barack Obama of Illinois and John McCain of Arizona. Long lines of voters promised a record turn-out of more than 130 million.

Many Israeli-American voters voted for McCain as a safer choice for Israel, fearing that pro-Arab figures would step out from behind Obama’s Middle East campaign team and be installed in key positions.

Likud leader Netanyahu hails Benny Begin’s return

Binyamin Netanyahu introduced the returning son of legendary party founder the late PM Menahem Begin at a news conference in Tel Aviv Tuesday, Nov. 4. Saturday, Nov. 1, DEBKAfile first revealed Benny Begin’s decision to quit the civil service as a geologist and bid for a place on the Likud list for the Feb. 10 general election.
