Cuba's Iran Ties Raise Specter of Bio-Attack on US

As the United States becomes more sensitive to the threat of a nuclear or biological attack on the U.S. homeland, Communist Cuba's alliance with Islamist Iran--which dates to the 1979 overthrow of the pro-US Shah by the Ayatollah Khomeini--raises the specter of an enemy biowarfare base just 90 miles from Key West, Florida.
In March of 2007, a high level Cuban defector, Colonel Roberto Ortega, warned of a top secret underground facility southwest of the Cuban capital that is a "biowarfare front." He claimed that the facility, operating under civilian cover, can produce many types of toxins that can be deployed as simply as utilizing a suicide bomber. These toxins can include bubonic plague, botulism, and yellow fever.
After living in the US quietly for four years, Ortega, who was in charge of medical services for the Cuban military, went on the Spanish language media circuit to expose an alleged advanced biological warfare weapons program.
“They can develop viruses and bacteria and dangerous sicknesses that are currently unknown and difficult to diagnose,” Ortega told The Miami Herald. “They don’t need missiles or troops. They need four agents, like the people from Al Qaida or the Taliban, who contaminate water, air conditioning or heating systems.”
'Biological Blackmail'
Ortega said Cuba was ready to use the biological agents “to blackmail the United States in case of an international incident” such as the threat of a US invasion.
Cuba is a world leader in biotech-pharmaceutical research. Cuba has over 300 biotechnology centers. Scientists in Havana are working on vaccinations against AIDS, leprosy and cholera and have developed some of the first vaccinations against cancer, which are almost ready to go on the market.
America's former UN envoy, John Bolton, while serving as Undersecretary of State for arms control and international security, triggered a furor in May of 2002, when he said: “The United States believes that Cuba has at least a limited offensive biological warfare research and development effort. Cuba has provided dual-use biotechnology to other rogue states."
Obama Plans to Appoint White House Official to Prevent Nuclear or Biological Attack on US City
Bryan Bender of the Boston Globe reports President-elect Barack Obama plans to appoint a new White House official to coordinate efforts to prevent terrorists from obtaining nuclear or biological weapons, advisers say, giving the highest priority to thwarting a catastrophic attack that a bipartisan panel warns could come in the next five years.
Naming a top deputy whose sole mission is to oversee the government's wide-ranging efforts to ensure such an attack never happens would mark a significant break with the Bush administration, which in resisting such a post has maintained that US efforts to reduce nuclear stockpiles and safeguard deadly pathogens are adequate.
A law requiring the position, passed by Congress more than a year ago and signed into law by President Bush, has been ignored for more than 15 months, in part because Bush opposes giving the Senate the power to confirm the official.
But Obama, whose first foreign trip as a US senator was to assess initiatives to lock down nuclear materials in the former Soviet Union, believes government programs lack coordination, are underfunded, and that having a top official to coordinate the efforts is crucial, according to three advisers with knowledge of the transition team's deliberations.

The world is a dangerous place. In fact, it is becoming more dangerous every day owing to the rise of radical Islam and the West's suicidal tolerance of Islamist terrorism and extremism.
China Confidential analysts say Iran plans to create an international incident in order to ratchet up tensions in the Middle East, rattle the incoming Obama administration, and raise oil prices.
China Confidential analysts also say there is growing concern among intelligence experts that Al Qaeda is planning a terrorist attack on a European or U.S. city. Mumbai could be the model.US Appeasers Urge Acceptance of Iranian A-Bomb
The Jerusalem Post reports that a new report by American appeasers of radical Islam calls on President-elect Obama to engage and accept a nuclear-armed Iran and its Palestinian proxy, Hamas--which has been formally designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department. The chapter devoted to Iran calls on the new administration to open multilateral dialogue between the US and Iran on all outstanding issues. Diplomacy, the report says, should begin immediately at a low level, even before the Iranian elections in June 2009, so that the US can better understand the Iranian hierarchy and political dynamic.
The chapter also calls on the US to view Iran as one united nation, ruled by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - a recommendation that goes against the strategy of trying to leverage inter-Iranian discord in order to effect regime change from within, without direct external intervention.
The report says Iran is two to three years away from being capable of militarizing its nuclear program, and this time is seen as sufficient for the US to adopt an updated diplomatic approach to prevent such a move from Teheran.
Intelligence assessments in Israel conflict with the American estimate, saying Iran might get the bomb as early as sometime in 2009.
The most problematic recommendation in the chapter devoted to Iran from an Israeli point of view, however, is an assessment that resorting to a military option is likely not to produce results worthy of the effort invested and that one of the many scenarios the US should prepare itself for is the reality of a nuclearized Islamic Republic.

DEBKAfile reports:Mumbai hospital doctors were horrified by the condition of the six Israeli bodies recovered from the smashed, blood-spattered rooms of Chabad Center Monday. Local and Israeli pathologists confirmed they were tortured by their Islamist terrorist captors before being bound together and killed in cold blood.
DEBKAfile adds: Israelis were the largest group of foreigners murdered by the Islamist terrorists. The single captured gunman confirmed they had been specifically targeted. The six bodies were flown home by an Israeli Air Force plane and are being laid to rest Tuesday in their home towns in state ceremonies.
Laid to rest Tuesday, Dec. 2 in state ceremonies in six Israeli towns are Norma Schwartzblatt-Rabinovitz, 50, from Mexico, who was due to immigrate to Israel and two of whose children already live there; the center's director Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, 29, and his wife Rivka, 26; Ms Yocheved Harpaz, 59, mother of four from Givatayim; Betzion Chroman, 28, father of three, who held dual US-Israeli citizenship, and Leibisch Teitelbaum, father of 8, an American from Brooklyn.
Israel's president, political leaders, rabbis and tens of thousands of mourners attended the eulogies for the dead at Kfar Chabad near Tel Aviv and their funerals. Rivka Holtzberg was six months pregnant. Her two-year old child, Moshe Holtzberg, was saved by his Indian nanny who fled the building with him in her arms. He was found later to be covered in bruises from a beating.
An Indian doctor, who conducted the post-mortem of the victims in Mumbai, said: "Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself (the first day of the Islamist terrorist attack). It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again."
"Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing," a doctor said.
Asked what was different about the victims of the incident, another doctor said: "It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatized. A bomb blast victim's body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight. But the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words," he said.
At the Mumbai synagogue, members of the Jewish community, Israeli diplomats and visitors gathered Monday for a memorial for Rabbi Gavriel Holtzman and his wife Rivka, directors of the Chabad Center which provided a home from home for Israelis and Jews visiting India. While the United States worries about the growing likelihood of a nuclear, biological, or chemical attack on a U.S. city, Israel is believed by analysts to have secretly warned its adversaries that any use of such weapons of mass destruction against its population centers would trigger an immediate, crushing response by the Israeli military.
Translation: Israel would use atomic bombs to obliterate the capitals of Iran and Syria in response to a WMD attack on any Israeli city or town--or military installation--by any organization, whether or not it is formally tied to Tehran or Damascus.
Should terrorists strike Israel with WMD, there would be no hesitation, no warning, no searching for evidence, no empty (U.S.-style) vows of "bringing terrorists to justice" on the part of Israel's leaders (regardless of party affiliation), only the targeted delivery of mass death into the hearts of those who have for decades plotted and planned Israel's destruction.
The term WMD includes ballistic missiles, regardless of their warheads. Should Iran, Hezbollah, or Syria bombard Tel Aviv or other Israeli cities with missiles, the Jewish state would hit back with missiles--nuclear missiles.
