Jack Straw lambasted over £130milllion office refurbishment
"A Government that prioritised public safety might have used this
money to prevent the early release of prisoners. Instead they've
spent a staggering sum on a new palace for the Lord Chancellor. When
ministers are demanding cuts in prison and courts budgets, such
lavish spending on their own offices will intensify questions about
the value of a new department which is clearly failing to live up to
its own name." - Nick Herbert quoted in the Sunday Telegraph 14/12/08

Nicholas Soames: Brown is not fit to lick my grandfather's boots
"Gordon Brown invoked the wartime spirit of Winston Churchill
yesterday when he made a surprise pre-Christmas trip to the
Afghanistan front line just hours after bombs killed four British
troops in the area... But the comparison to Winston Churchill
prompted a ferocious response from Tory MP Nicholas Soames,
Churchill's grandson. "He is not fit to lick my grandfather's boots,"
said Mr Soames. "One is a party hack and the other is our greatest-
ever national leader. My grandfather led a charge at the Battle of
Omdurman; Brown didn't even have the courage to call a General
Election." - Mail on Sunday 14/12/08

A useless turbine: Featured in "Waste Watch" in the Sunday Telegraph
is a £15,000 turbine installed by Ipswich Borough Council to "provide
power for an ice cream kiosk" in a park. It has not produced any
electricity at all in the 11 months since it was installed. The
Council blames "technical problems", the chief of which seems to be a
lack of wind. As the Renewable Energy Foundation puts it "We must
remember that wind turbines are garden ornaments, not power stations".

Alternative Climate News:
I came across a wonderful spoof climate news site. Perhaps the
funniest piece was:

their estimates on rising sea levels, predicting they could submerge
Ronnie Corbett within a decade (Roger Helmer MEP's Blog "Straight

Mugabe is a monster
He is an unelected Head of Government. He accuses political
opponents of undermining the economy. He arrests political
opponents. He blames his wrecked economy on foreign countries. His
economic plan is to nationalise the banks and to print more money.
But then come to think of it, you can say exactly the same of Gordon
Brown. (Thanks to Guido Fawkes for this insight).(Roger Helmer MEP's
