In the public interest?

On BBC Radio Four’s Moral Maze this evening, we’ll be discussing the apparent transmission by Sky TV, also this evening, of the ‘assisted suicide’ of the motor neurone disease sufferer Craig Ewert at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland. Meanwhile, I am troubled by the reasons given by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC (pictured), for deciding not to prosecute the parents of the paralysed rugby player Daniel James whose assisted suicide took place in the same clinic. James had tried to kill himself on several occasions, and after imploring him not to do so his parents finally agreed to help him end his life. Accordingly, they aided him in his correspondence with Dignitas, agreed to accompany him to the Swiss clinic, organised the flights and arranged for appropriate carers to be available to assist him...

A case of premature obfuscation?

Uh oh. Is this another Lewinsky momentalready? The Illinois Democratic governor, Rod Blagojevich, and his chief of staff, John Harris, have been arrested for what the US sleazebusting lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald has called a ‘staggering’ level of corruption. According to the Chicago Tribune

Blagojevich is accused of a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy, including alleged attempts by the governor to try to sell or trade the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by President-elect Barack Obama in exchange for financial benefits for the governor and his wife. Blagojevich also is accused of obtaining campaign contributions in exchange for other official actions.

A major headache for the Cosa Nostra Democratic Party, no? Now here’s the thing. When asked at a press conference what contact he’d had with Blagojevich’s office about his replacement in the Senate, Prez-elect Obama said:

The truth phobia

Matthias Kuentzel, author of Jihad and Jew-Hatred, has an article in the Wall Street Journal about the troubling lurch into moral equivalence by Berlin’s Centre for Research on Antisemitism, which has equated Jew-hatred with Islamophobia. The Berlin centre is but the latest body to fall into this trap. People who are concerned about prejudice in all its forms, including many Jews, often make the false equation between the two – as Suzanne Reyto described here -- without realising that the intellectual laziness and moral sloppiness involved lead directly to both a downgrading of real prejudice and a demonisation of the truth in order to bring about the suppression of that truth. Kuentzel writes:
