On orders from Tehran, the Palestinian Hamas used the cover of the 22-day Gaza conflict to aim rockets at the American Forward-Based X-band Transportable (FBX-T) anti-missile radar system lodged at Israel's big Nevatim air base east of the Negev capital Beersheba, DEBKA-Net-Weekly disclosed. Hamas again breached the ceasefire it declared Jan. 19 Saturday, Jan. 31, with a Grad rocket fired against the town of Ashkelon to the north of Gaza. It exploded harmlessly on open ground after a siren alerted the population. An Israeli air strike hit the rocket team. A major Israeli response to repeated Hamas violations is expected, Round Two of Operation Cast Lead.

Israeli Cobra in action against Hamas

Israeli air raids struck a Hamas target in Khan Younes, inflicting at least 10 Palestinian casualties, Thursday, Jan. 29, after two missiles aimed at Sderot from Gaza early that morning hit the Shear Hanegev region. DEBKAfile's military circles report that in the 48 hours since a roadside bomb from Gaza killed an Israeli soldier and injured three, Hamas has reverted to its tit-for-tat practice in an effort to demonstrate who makes the rules.

In Damascus, Hamas and other radical Palestinian leaders rejected Cairo's plan for a long-term truce.

Cyprus searches ship carrying banned Iranian arms destined for Hamas

Cyprus president Demetris Christofias said Friday, Jan. 30, that a ship being searched off Limassol is carrying a cargo that contravenes UN resolutions. Cyprus state radio reported the vessel was Russian-owned and may have been traveling from Iran to Syria with weapons destined for Hamas. DEBKAfile cites UN Security Council Resolution 1747 of March 24, 2007, which toughened sanctions against Iran to include a ban on the country's arms exports, and would have provided the US Navy with authority to seize the arms. However, it was allowed to continue on it voyage.

Iranian "aid ship" for Gaza

DEBKAfile's military and intelligence sources report that the aid ship Iran Shahed , which the Israel embargo of the Gaza Strip forced to stay 42 km from the coast, took delivery Monday, Jan. 26 of sophisticated communications equipment from Cyprus for maintaining contact with Hamas leaders who remain in hiding. It came with a group of maintenance engineers.
