DEBKAfile's military sources report that Hamas does not propose to put its entire 15,000-strong army in harm's way against the expected Israeli military invasion. It will confine its resistance to small pockets and sabotage and let Israel troops occupy most of Gaza Strip territory. Assuming the incoming force will stop short of conquering Gaza City and put it to siege, Hamas planners propose to wear the siege force down by nocturnal guerrilla forays and force an inconclusive end to the conflict.

A Beersheba classroom hit by a Grad rocket

Nine sophisticated, heavy Grad rockets had hit Beersheba by the end of Day 5 of the Israeli operation against Hamas, Wednesday Dec. 31. Most exploded in built-up areas. One dropped through the ceiling of an empty classroom. Twenty-one shock victims taken were hospitalized.

Beersheba's 250,000 citizens were ordered to stay close to solid buildings and schools were shut until further notice. Beersheba University has suspended studies and New Year festivities cancelled.
