An Israeli soldier was killed Sunday in fighting in the Gaza Strip.
DEBKAfile's military sources report that on the second day of their ground offensive against Hamas, Sunday, Jan 4, Israeli forces have closed their siege encirclement of Gaza City. Thirty Israeli soldiers were injured - one critically, an officer and soldier seriously, the rest moderately and lightly. At least 30 Hamas gunmen were killed in the first thrust of Israeli armored infantry, tanks, engineering, artillery and intelligence units into the enclave after a week of intense airstrikes.
Armored and infantry units are fighting for control of Philadelphi arms smuggling corridor.

Most military pundits agree that the Israel's Gaza operation is nothing like the 2006 Lebanon War. In the broader sense this is true. The differences are undeniable.
Therefore, Israel would be better served borrowing American operational modes for overthrowing Taliban in Kabul in 2001 and ultimately defeating al Qaeda in Iraq rather than looking for differences with the Hizballah model of 2006.

Olmert: The Gaza ground invasion was unavoidable
