NEWNATIONS BULLETIN 14 JANUARY 2009

WORLD DEMOCRACY JANUARY '09

Our worldaudit report reviews the state of democracy in all of those countries (150), with a population of one million or more, and presents them in league tables with four divisions.

Our criteria are:
Human Rights, Political Rights, Freedom of Speech,
and the absence of Public Corruption.

Our data sources and methodology are to be found at the World Audit
league tables.

This report places: DENMARK 1st, SWEDEN 2nd and FINLAND 3rd

We have been presenting these reports since 1997 and this is the 18th of the new millennium.

Since the beginning, leadership has been dominated by four Scandinavian countries and New Zealand, with Switzerland and the Netherlands following close behind.

The first two divisions totaling 37 countries are unquestionably democratic.

Division Three (36 countries) are making progress towards full democracy, but are not there yet. They are on 'the cusp.'

The Fourth Division (77) a half of all the world's nations are NOT democratic. They range between those who are just falling short, to the great majority who have little in common with the democratic countries. In common with each other they have a disdain for democratic values and are ruled by despotic leaderships.

In addition to listing by divisions we also show sidebar tables that
give the democratic order of the member states of NATO, EU, OECD, G8,
ASEAN, APEC, AFRICAN UNION, ARAB LEAGUE,
and the nations of LATIN
AMERICA.
