France, the country that has made cowardice a national religion, condemned Israel's invasion of the Islamo- terrorist state in Gaza. The French government described the Israeli action as a dangerous military escalation that "complicated efforts by the international community to end the fighting, bring immediate aid to civilians and reach a permanent ceasefire".
In London, the appeasement-prone foreign secretary, David Miliband, said the intensification of the Israeli assault would cause "alarm and dismay" and renewed calls for a swift cessation of violence.
In New York, the pathetic United Nations Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis.God Bless Israel as it Fights for the Civilized World
The Jerusalem Post reports that at least 30 Hamas terrorists were killed as IDF troops swept into the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday night, encountering fierce resistance from Hamas forces entrenched in fortifications just over the border.
IDF sources said that the goal was to conquer territory in northern Gaza, including rocket launch sites.
Soldiers from the Armored Corps, Engineering Corps, and Paratroopers, Givati (scroll down for a profile of this unit), and Golani brigades were participating in the fighting, with at least four brigades' worth of troops inside the Gaza Strip.
IDF sources said that a majority of the rockets fired into Beersheba and Ashdod were launched from the northern Gaza Strip.
One of the major aims of the operation was also to deliver a serious blow to the Hamas military wing, which the IDF estimated had not been severely weakened under the air campaign.British Appeasers of Islamism Rally Against Israel
Demonstrators took to the streets across Britain on Saturday to protest against Israeli airstrikes on Gaza.
The biggest rally was in London, where organisers were expecting thousands of protestors including singer Annie Lennox and former London mayor Ken Livingstone to march through the British capital.
Demonstrators on the event organised by the Stop the War Coalition were to leave old shoes for Prime Minister Gordon Brown at his Downing Street residence, in the spirit of an Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at US President George W. Bush.
Former Eurythmics star Lennox said both the Palestinians and Israelis were "wrong" and a total ceasefire was the only option.
She said the intervention from Bush blaming Hamas for starting the violence, had not helped the situation.
She told the BBC: "The problem is, from my perspective, they are pouring petrol onto the fire.
"They have to sit down. This is a small window of opportunity just before things kick off.
"For every one person killed in Gaza, they are creating 100 suicide bombers. It's not just about Gaza, it's about all of us."
Meanwhile, the Jewish community is on alert following Muslim gang attacks. From The Jewish Chronicle:A gang of pro-Palestinian demonstrators rampaged through the heart of the Jewish community on Wednesday evening, attacking businesses and assaulting a motorist.
Police and the CST have increased patrols and security following the incidents in Golders Green, North-West London, amid concerns of further trouble during Shabbat.
The group of around 15 men had been demonstrating in support of Palestinians in Gaza but then made their way along Golders Green Road, attacking the man as he got into his car.
They attempted to gain access to a number of kosher restaurants and Jewish businesses, and at one point entered Solly’s restaurant, but were thrown out by staff and diners.
Despite officers arriving in the area quickly, the gang was able to escape on the Tube.Current Phase of Gaza Fighting May be Ending
AP reports:Israeli warplanes and gunboats blasted more than two dozen Hamas targets Saturday, including weapons storage facilities, training centers and leaders' homes as Israel's offensive against Gaza's Islamic militant rulers entered a second week.
There were tentative signs that the current phase of fighting may be nearing an end. Most of the airstrikes targeted empty buildings and abandoned sites, suggesting Israel may be running out of targets.
Israeli defense officials said some 10,000 troops, including tank, artillery and special operations units, were massed on the Gaza border and prepared to invade. They said top commanders are split over whether to send in ground forces, in part because such an operation could lead to heavy casualties but also because they believe Hamas already has been dealt a heavy blow. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were classified discussions.
UPDATE: CNN is reporting that Israeli missiles killed the commander of Gaza City's rocket-launching squads. The network attributed the information to an Israel Defense Forces spokesman and Palestinian sources.
Hamas commander Azkariah al-Jamal reportedly died when his car was attacked early Saturday.
Another airstrike killed two Hamas terrorists in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza.
