BRITAIN’S most prominent Muslims have denounced rising anti-semitic attacks in the UK inspired by the Gaza conflict.

More than 20 top scholars said British Jews "should not be held responsible" for Israel's actions in Gaza.

Jewish groups say there has been a record rise in anti-Semitic incidents since the crisis began last month.

The country’s mosques were warned by anti-extremists The Quilliam Foundation that the deaths of Palestians “cannot justify” attacks on Jews.

In the letter the foundation said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about anti-Semitic assaults on British Jews, and a recent arson attack on a London synagogue.

“We unreservedly condemn attacks on innocent British citizens and the desecration of all places of worship.

“British Jews should not be held responsible for the actions of the Israeli Government.”

The letter's signatories include internationally renowned imams, writers, academics and community activists.

Ed Husain, co-director of the foundation, said: “Nothing justifies attacking our fellow citizens of a Jewish background here in Britain.”

Anti-Semitism monitors The Community Security Trust says there were 150 incidents in the 18 days since the conflict in Gaza began.

One synagogue suffered a suspected arson attack in north west London last week. Most other incidents involved abusive phone calls or name-calling in the street.

Dave Rich of the CST said: "The incidents since Gaza began are far and away the highest number of incidents that we have recorded.”
