US Needs $2.2 Trillion for Infrastructure
Dateline USA....
Decades of underfunding and inattention have endangered America's infrastructure to an alarming degree. A whopping $2.2 trillion in repairs and upgrades is needed over the next five years to meet adequate conditions.
That's the conclusion of the new 2009 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, released today by the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), which assigns an overall grade of "D" to the nation as well as individual grades in 15 infrastructure categories.
Since ASCE's last assessment in 2005, there has been little change in the condition of America's roads, bridges, drinking water systems, and other public works.
With the nation's infrastructure receiving renewed attention from the White House, Congress, and the public as a vital part of an economic stimulus package, the Report Card offers informed guidance from professional engineers on where funds would best be spent.Malyasia Investing in India's Infrastructure
Malaysian companies have been asked to continue investing in India's infrastructure sector in the face of the current world economic slowdown.
Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Ashok K. Kantha said Malaysian companies had always maintained a good track record in handling mega infrastructure development projects.
"Malaysian companies, with proven expertise in infrastructure development, should continue to invest in India's infrastructure projects--in highways, township development, telecommunications, power sector, airports and seaports.
"Infrastructure development will be manageably sustainable when the Indian government puts in new investments in infrastructure development by way of a stimulus to the economy," Kantha said.
India is an important source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for Malaysia. In 2007, India was the sixth largest source of FDI, with a record RM2.9 billion in approved investments in Malaysia's manufacturing sector, up from just RM8.3 million in 2006.
