Livni rules out joining Netanyahu

Tzipi Livni has ruled out joining an Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Miss Livni, who won the most votes in the recent election, has said she would prefer to remain in opposition rather than join forces with Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a private note to the outgoing prime minister Ehud Olmert, Tzipi Livni wrote: "I have no intention of being in a unity government headed by Bibi [Mr Netanyahu’s nickname] - and don’t hint that." (Continued below)

Mr Olmert, who received the note only after it had been captured on camera during a party meeting, was reported to have urged her to consider joining a coalition led by the man who she beat in last week's general election.

After the meeting, Miss Livni said: "You don’t have to be a mathematical genius to understand that 28 seats are more than 27. "We will continue to serve the public, either by forming the government, as the public chose, or if need be, in the opposition."
