Durban 2 Conference to test Obama's views of Israel
The Obama administration said late Saturday it would participate in planning a United Nations conference on racism, despite concerns the meeting will be used by Arab nations and others to criticize Israel. Israel is boycotting the conference because a declaration equating Zionism with racism is expected to be made there. In addition, it is expected that the organizers and participants will charge that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians, and, like before in Durban, will make anti-Semitic statements. ....................... read more

Livni: Give up half of 'Land of Israel'
Tzipi Livni, who hopes to be appointed Israel's prime minister-designate, said Monday Israel must give up considerable territory in exchange for peace with the Palestinians, drawing a clear distinction with her rival, Benjamin Netanyahu. She told a convention of American Jewish leaders, "we need to give up half of the Land of Israel," using a term that refers to biblical borders that include today's Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, repeating her well-known view that pulling out of Palestinian areas would be for the good of Israel, to maintain it as a Jewish state. ....

Israel, Iran liable to clash in 2009 over nukes, says U.S. intel chief
Israel and Iran are liable to enter into a confrontation or a crisis sometime this year due to Tehran's progress in its nuclear weapons program and Jerusalem's determination to thwart it, the head of U.S. intelligence told lawmakers. In a report to the Senate Intelligence Committee on the potential threats as foreseen by the 16 intelligence arms of the United States, Dennis Blair said that Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Shi'ite group which is backed by Iran, has beefed up its weapons arsenal in preparation for another round of fighting with Israel. Hezbollah presents a formidable threat to U.S. interests, particularly if the organization feels Washington directly threatens Iran or acts against the group's targets, infrastructure, and leadership. ....................... read more

5. Apostate Christianity

Top Christian author challenges Vatican over it's acceptance of Darwinism
The current No. 1 best-selling Christian author in the nation says the Vatican is believing Charles Darwin over Jesus in accepting evolution. In challenging a report by Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, saying Darwin's theory is compatible with Christianity, Ray Comfort, author of the hottest Christian book on Amazon, "You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence But You Can't Make Him Think," points out Jesus himself backed up the Genesis account of Creation when he said, "In the beginning God created them male and female." ..................... read more

Same-Sex Relationships "Comparable to Marriage": Anglican Head
As long as a homosexual partnership is "faithful and lifelong," it presents only the same ethical questions as a natural marriage, wrote the head of the Church of England in a series of letters, dating from 2000 and 2001, that have only just been made public. The London Times revealed this weekend that Dr. Rowan Williams, the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, made the statements in a series of letters to Deborah Pitt, a psychiatrist and evangelical Christian living in his former archdiocese in South Wales, while Williams was still the archbishop of Wales. ...................... read more

Strange Fire In The House of the Lord
No one fully understands what Nadab and Abihu did to prompt God to strike them dead in the sanctuary of Israel. The Bible says they loaded their firepans with incense, ignited the substance and "offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them". As a result of their careless and irreverent behavior, fire came from God's presence and consumed them. Although we don't know the details of what Nadab and his brother did with the holy incense, we know they were careless and irreverent about the things of God. This ancient story has relevant application for us today. We don't use incense or firepans in our worship, but we are expected to handle God's Word with care and minister to His people in the fear of the Lord. In other words: No funny business allowed. We aren't allowed to mix God's Word with foreign concepts or mix our worship with pagan practices. Yet as I minister in various churches around this country I am finding that strange fire is spreading in our midst-even in churches that call themselves "Spirit-filled." Pastors and leaders need to be aware of these trends: ................. read more

6. The Rise of Islam

Archbishop of Canterbury: Society is coming round to my views on sharia
On the anniversary of the interview in which Dr Rowan Williams said it "seems inevitable" that some parts of sharia would be enshrined in this country's legal code, he claimed "a number of fairly senior people" now take the same view. The Archbishop, the most senior cleric in the Church of England, faced calls to resign last February when he said it was likely that elements of the religious principles based on the Koran, concerning marriage, finance and conflict resolution, would be enshrined in British legislation one day. . ..................... read more

Can't bring liquids on a plane? Meet the British Islamists responsible
A gang of British Islamists plotted to cause deaths on an "almost unprecedented scale" by blowing up transatlantic airliners using bombs disguised in soft drink bottles, a London court heard on Tuesday. The eight men were almost ready to execute their plan to simultaneously bring down seven aircraft in mid-air as they flew from London to the United States and Canada when they were arrested, Woolwich Crown Court was told. The arrests led to a massive increase in security and brought chaos to global airports, airlines and passengers. More than a thousand flights were canceled in the aftermath and limits on the carrying of liquids on planes still stand as a result of the plot...................... read more

You don't normally hear about beheadings in the United States. But perhaps you should prepare yourself to hear more about them in the future. 7. Increase in Knowledge/New Technologies

DNA left at crime scene could be used to create picture of criminal's Face, say scientists
Forensic experts will soon be able to reconstruct facial features and skin just by reading DNA, U.S. scientists said.
'Forensic molecular photofitting' maps the genes that are linked to skin pigmentation and facial structure which means a person's face could emerge from the analysis, Dr Mark Shriver from Pennsylvania State University said. The process has already been used to help identify and convict serial killer Derek Todd Lee who murdered seven women in Louisiana... ........

Mobile Phone Payments Could Be Door To Cashless Society
The global credit crunch has delayed the shift from payments being made by mobiles instead of dollars or pounds, according to technology experts. Some believe it will be three to five years before money goes out of fashion and a truly cashless society emerges. "Consumers would in many cases prefer cashless transactions when away from home. So around the world solutions providers have leveraged SMS, mobile internet and downloadable mobile applications to enable mobile commerce and payments.".......................... read more

Dying cheques mark changing times
Consumers in the UK should expect a revolution in the way they pay for things in the near future, according to payments association Apacs. The cheque, which is 350 years old on 16 February, is said to be in irreversible decline as innovation points towards a cashless society. Banks will increasingly battle for a consumer to use one card exclusively. By 2015, the number of payments made by cash in the UK will be overtaken for the first time by other ways of paying, according to Apacs. .. .......................... read more

As Data Collecting Grows, Privacy Erodes
There are plenty of people who can muster outrage at Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees third baseman who is the latest example of win-at-any-cost athletes. But I’d prefer to see him as at the cutting edge of another scourge — the growing encroachment on privacy. Alex Rodriguez’s test for steroid use was supposed to be anonymous. The way Mr. Rodriguez’s positive steroid test result became public followed a path increasingly common in the computer age: third-party data collection. We are typically told that personal information is anonymously tracked for one reason — usually something abstract like making search results more accurate, recommending book titles or speeding traffic through the toll booths on the thruways. But it is then quickly converted into something traceable to an individual, and potentially life-changing............................. read more

Where you've been on Net not private, judge rules
An Ontario Superior Court ruling could open the door to police routinely using Internet Protocol addresses to find out the names of people online, without any need for a search warrant. Justice Lynne Leitch found that there is "no reasonable expectation of privacy" in subscriber information kept by Internet service providers (ISPs), in a decision issued earlier this week. It is the first time a Superior Court-level judge in Canada has ruled on whether there are privacy rights in this information that are protected by the Charter. "There is no confidentiality left on the Internet if this ruling stands," said James Stribopoulos, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. ............................ read more

8. Christian Worldview/Issues

Publisher Recalls Encyclopedia for Being 'Too Christian'
Wiley-Blackwell, a major academic publisher, is recalling copies of Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization and scrapping the print run after critics said the entries were "too Christian" and "too anti-Muslim." The publisher was set to release the four-volume encyclopedia this month after it was completed last September. The book's publisher and editorial director want to "de-christianize" all 1,450 entries in the encyclopedia to make it politically correct before it can be reprinted, according to Kurian. The press is looking to delete words including, "Antichrist," "Enemy," "Beloved Disciple," "Gates of Hell," "Witness," "Virgin Birth," "Resurrection," "Evangelism” and any reference with an "evangelical tone." BC and AD, chronological markers for "Before Christ" and "Anno Domini," will also likely to dropped. ................... read more

9. Other Events To Watch

IMF chief warns second wave of countries will require bail-out
A "second wave" of countries will fall victim to the economic crisis and face being bailed out by the International Monetary Fund, its chief warned at the G7 summit in Rome. Dominique Strauss-Kahn's warning comes amid growing concern that at some point in the next year a major economy could have to seek support from the Fund. Mr Strauss-Kahn, who was yesterday attending the Group of Seven leading finance ministers' meeting in Rome, said: "I expect a second wave of countries to come knocking." Some have speculated that the UK may have to seek IMF support if capital markets become frightened of the size of its foreign financial liabilities, which increasingly appear to have become supported by the state. But there are a swathe of Eastern European countries which appear particularly vulnerable and may need IMF support. ....................... read more
