How Financially Accountable Are 27 EU Governments - We Still Don

The socialist Richard Corbett (Yorks and Humberside) presented what he called and "interesting report" to the Budget Control Committee last week, about the way all 27 nation states conduct internal audits of their public accounts.  Essentially his report was based on a paper survey of all treasury and audit departments.

Unfortunately he forgot to ask the two most important questions to which we need answers.  First, did each government fully meet the requirements of the International Financial Accounting Standards?  Secondly, how many departments in each government had their accounts qualified by internal or external auditors?

Otherwise Corbett’s report was a terrific addition to public knowledge, no doubt produced at vast expense!  The words 'damp' and 'squib' spring to mind.

At the end of the discussion on the report, Brian Gray, still the Commission's chief accountant, referred to "our own money" when he mentioned EU funds due from the governments of nation states!
