I don’t know what to say

After all is said and done, having studied the various plans to bail out banks, buy their toxic assets and bail out AIG again, plus stabilize world currencies, I don’t know what to say. The culprits who generated the debt are still among us, with an itchy trigger finger to create more. I’m waiting for the financial mafia roundup, like that huge Apalachian Meeting bust in the 1950s.

It was as Wiki tells us “a historic summit of the American Mafia held on November 14, 1957, at the home of mobster Joseph “Joe the Barber” Barbara in Apalachian, New York. It was attended by roughly 100 mafia crime bosses from the United StatesCanada andItaly. Expensive cars with license plates from around the country aroused the curiosity of the local and state law enforcement, who raided the meeting, causing mafiosi to flee into the woods and the surrounding area of the Apalachin estate. Over 60 underworld bosses were detained and indicted due to the disastrous meeting.

“The direct and most significant outcome of the Apalachin meeting was that it helped to confirm the existence of a National Crime Syndicate, which some -- including J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigations -- had long refused to acknowledge.”

Today, we seem to be dealing with another International Crime Syndicate.

And I want to see today’s financial mafia in leg irons and cuffs headed towards some federal detention center to keep them out of business for a long time. An open invitation to join them should be extended to any new capital credit finaglers on the horizon. Crime should not pay. I read that in a Crime Stoppers comic book as a boy. In the crime comic book of today, there seem to be far more Jokers and Lex Luthors than Batmans and Supermans cruising Gotham or Metropolis, and/or some very low-key Clark Kents disguised as Internet journalists.

Crime seems to have sunk so deeply into the core of our country and the world that, seemingly, no field of endeavor has been allowed to remain untainted from illegal gains. Or is this just me? Am I the only one feeling it? Will we ever feel cheerful again that we live in a reasonably decent world? Or must we be contend with the post-Sartre Nausea of our existential void, a moral emptiness scattered with the real-life analogs of bad Bond movies and their imitations.

What has happened to the species or have I just noticed it or have I been living in New York too long, in which too many mafiosi —from Wall Street to Forest Hills’ Russian and Israeli mobs to Little Italy’s good old crew -- reside, not to mention the Chinatown mob, specializing in human trafficking and money laundering. Is it time to turn the lights out and move to some distant suburb where the greatest threat is the local redneck gun and ammo club or a warped crony infested political machine? Right now I keep tripping on international, cosmic crime of historic proportions.

My computer screen, like my consciousness, is flooded with corruption, conspiracies, scams, the New World Order, Bill Gates taking over the world’s computers, the Rothschilds monopolizing the financial world, the Knights Templar, the Vatican Bank, P2, the Club of Rome, Operation Gladio, the Bilderbergers, the Illuminati, the Freemasons, world Zionism, and impending doom of world pandemic flu, to mention a few. I don’t know what to say.

Where is even lowly Mighty Mouse to save us? And Homer Simpson and Fred Flintstone to fire us all up into cosmic indifference and the simple pleasures of shopping at Wal-Mart, eating at MacDonald’s again, that is, when the economy returns from the depression.

I’m speechless, like a settler in a wagon train gathered in a circle to ward off all the amassed tribes of miscreants set to attack from the hills above. Will the World Bankers take over the world after wiping the war paint from their faces? Has the CIA become another mercenary army like Blackwater or the Contras of yesteryear? I don’t know what to say.

What ever happened to Henry Aldrich, Duffy’s Tavern, Allen’s Alley, Joe the Bartender? Have they been devoured by HAARP’s high-frequency auditory waves or ELFs extra low frequency soundwaves, which also may control the lousy weather we’ve been having. What is this movie we’re in? I don’t know what to say.

Has democracy been quietly replaced in the night by a corporate kleptocracy? Is the two-party system too dumb to believe in? Are there no heroes, or even anti-heroes, only puppets whose strings are pulled by evil men with solid gold teeth? When did we fall over the edge of 1950s reality into the Brave New World, which is hardly brave and we’re told for sure not new? Did it happen sometime after the Apalachian bust? Did the American dream fade in the black and white TVs bringing us one bum after the other pleading the Fifth Amendment?

Will we each have to memorize a book as the good people did in Fahrenheit 451, as those in power continue to burn books, erase torture tapes, and bury documented crimes? How will we preserve our civilization, our values, through sheer memory? I don’t know what to say. The I-pods and Blackberries are stalking us, as are the phone-cams, daily digital wizards and toys of mass listening devices. Can we, should we, speak?

I don’t . . . know what . . . to say. Somebody circulate a petition. We’ll all sign, at least those of us who can still read and write.
