If, hypothetically, Patricia Hewitt were to be out walking on Beachy Head and encounter someone poised to throw themselves off that cliff – maybe even a disabled person in a wheelchair asking for assistance in rolling the chair off the edge – would she give them a helping hand in pushing them off, or would she try her best to persuade them away from the cliff edge? What’s the difference? What has been all but overlooked in the pandemonium is the catastrophic damage he is doing abroad to the prospects for the defence of the free world. His recklessly misjudged televised appeal to Iran – in which he didn’t even distinguish between the regime and the oppressed people of Iran, whom he effectively threw under the bus by pointedly recognising ‘the Islamic Republic’, ie the regime – brought a swift response from that regime of contemptuous disdain: pretty appalling looking reports coming out of Israel where members of the Israeli Defence Force who were involved in the Gaza operation have talked about effectively being told to shoot at civilians. Hague replied: Well those are absolutely appalling stories. There is no question about that. We don't yet know the truth of them. I think it's very important to say that.
