Obama and the EU

Letter to The Editor
Wall Street Journal
6 April 2009

Sir

Barack Obama's idealism and oratory during his visit to Europe has enhanced support for the USA across the world, which must be good for us all. But the President would do well to remember that the EU is viscerally anti-American.

I have endured many an occasion in the European Parliament when members - and Commissioners, for that matter - have sounded more like the fourth Reich in civilian clothes. Defending the US has often been a tough job.

Despite its long support for the development and expansion of the EU, the USA still has to wake up to the envy and loathing towards it which is deeply embedded in Brussels. One visit won't change that.

Mr Sarkozy's outburst about Mr Obama's encouragement of Turkish membership was the mere tip of an iceberg. Like it or not, it reflected an important strand of European opinion.
