Tax Havens Benefit Us All2 April 2009
31 March 2009
Sir
Lord Oakeshott joins in the chorus to abolish tax havens (Daily Mail 31 March) without, it seems, understanding their true benefit to all of us.
Does he not recognise that they are vital to many small economies around the world and - much more importantly - they force fiscal and taxation discipline on governments?
Without tax havens there would be nothing to stop profligate governments like ours from taxing the wealth-creating business sector to a standstill, and bloating the unproductive public sector.
The very existence of tax havens forces governments to compete. To attract and retain enterprises in their domains they must keep their tax burden tolerable.
