EXCLUSIVE: Egypt Foils Islamist Plot to Kill Mubarak

China Confidential has learned that Egypt has foiled an Islamist plot to assassinate President Hosni Mubarak.

The conspirators include domestic Sunni fanatics--members of the Muslim Brotherhood--and Shiite extremists--more specifically, members of Iran's Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah.

Islamist terrorists have often bridged the Sunni-Shiite theological divide.

Earlier this month, Egypt said it had uncovered a Hezbollah cell operating inside its borders that was planning attacks against tourist sites in Sinai, conducting surveillance on strategic targets including the Suez Canal, and funneling arms and money to Iran's Palestinian proxy, Hamas, which is also backed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah subsequently admitted that the ringleader of the cell was a member of his organization.

Egyptian and Israeli intelligence experts say Iran aims to overthrow the Egyptian government, which decades ago made peace with Israel. The Egyptian leader responsible for the peace accord, President Anwar El Sadat, was assassinated in October 1981 by an Islamist coalition that included Ayman al-Zawahiri, who went on to become Osama Binladen's second-in-command in Al Qaeda.

American Hostages in N. Korea in Grave Danger

Two American hostages in North Korea are in grave danger.

The Stalinist/Kimist state says it will put the two journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, on trial for unspecified criminal charges.

The Americans were arrested last month for allegedly crossing a river and entering North Korea from China.

Intelligence experts assure China Confidential that the reporters were captured on the Chinese side of the border.
