RIDAY, APRIL 3, 2009

Lord Hoffmann tells it as it is.

The second most senior law lord has attacked the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for attempting to create a "federal law of Europe". Lord Hoffmann, who is known for his pronouncements on liberty and is a former director of Amnesty International, has asserted that the ECHR is trying to "aggregate its jurisdiction".
We  are fully aware of the federalisers attempts at "competence creep" whereby the various bodies consistently try to enlarge their authority over the formerly free and independent nations of Europe by snatching more and more power in order to create a single, bureaucratically imposed, framework of laws and powers over us. Issues like this are a sign of how more and more people are becoming aware of, and protesting about, the encroaching destruction of our ancient liberties.

Lord Hoffmann is, as is usually the case when people start speaking out about these things, about to retire but hopefully this will alert the rest of our judiciary to the dangers of the law becoming ever more remote from the original source of its power and authority, The People.
