The Sunday Times Rich List for 2009 is headed by steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, with a fortune estimated to be worth £10.8 billion.

Lakshmi Mittal saw his fortune more than halve, down from $16.9bn to $10.8bn

But despite being Britain's wealthiest man, he lost more money - £17 billion - than any other individual or company in the UK in the past year.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich took second place in the list, with a fortune worth £7 billion. But the oligarch also saw his personal wealth plummet by 40 per cent, or £4.7 billion.

The economic down-turn has had a withering effect on the entire top 10 of The Sunday Times Rich List for 2009, who all saw their fortunes fall by several billion pounds.
