Weekly Commentary: Settlement activity - positive catalyzer

Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 16 April 2009

Is time on the Palestinian's side or on Israel's side?

This question drives much of what is happening here.

After all, if time is on the Palestinian's side then they have nothing to
lose holding on to their maximalist demands.

How can Israel convince the Palestinians that time is not on their side?

There is one area that tips the scales in Israel's favor.

There is one area in which an Israeli gain can be seen as a potentially
permanent Palestinian loss.

And that area is settlement activity.

Every additional row of houses, every new neighborhood, and every growing
community threatens to takes another chip off of the pile that the
Palestinians can hope to ultimately wrest from Israel's hands.

That is why the settlement issue is so critical to the Palestinians.

That is why settlement activity can serve as a catalyst for serious
negotiations while a settlement freeze only encourages the Palestinians to
continue with their ridiculous demands.
