The European Campaign was launched yesterday by David Cameron.
At the South West Euro Launch yesterday in Taunton the Euro Candidates all signed a Commitment
I am also attaching a guide for Canvassers regarding UKIP.
OUR COMMITMENT TO THE BRITISH PEOPLE
If elected to the European Parliament on 4 June we pledge to:
Transparency and Ethics
• Publish a breakdown of all office costs, signed off by a certified accountant.
• Publish details of all travel, including journeys to and from Brussels and Strasbourg and trips to any third
countries.
• Publish the names of all staff, contractors and ‘paying agents’ engaged by us.
• Publish all expenses claims online and update them on a quarterly basis. Details included in the Register of
Members’ Interests will be published on the Conservative MEPs’ website – providing a ‘one stop shop’ for
members of the public to access full disclosure details of their Conservative MEPs’ expenses.
• Continue to oppose – and vote against – any bailout of the MEP pension fund using public money.
• Publish online details of all meetings with lobbyists and interest groups. We will only accept hospitality from
lobbyists and interest groups where it is relevant to the role of an MEP, and where this is of a value greater than
£50 it will be listed in the Register of Members’ Interests. No Conservative MEP will accept gifts from lobbyists or
interest groups.
• Press for these standards to be applied across the European Parliament.
Constitution
• Support a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, the renamed EU Constitution.
• Support the right of the British people to have their say – through a referendum – on any proposed future
transfer of competences, as powers are called in EU jargon.
• Oppose any further moves to involve Britain in deeper political integration in the EU.
The Economy
• Keep Britain out of the euro.
• Support the return of social and employment legislation to national control.
• Work for an open and flexible Europe that brings down trade barriers, both within and outside the EU, and set a
course for other countries to join the EU subject to a rigorous accession process.
• Work to cut the administration costs of EU legislation by 25 per cent.
• Defend our opt-out from the Working Time Directive.
More for Less
• Oppose wasteful spending throughout the EU, including calling for an end to European Parliament meetings in
Strasbourg.
• Work to save up to €1 billion a year and for a firm cap on the EU budget.
• Continue to vote against the EU accounts until they are cleared by an auditor.
• Defend the UK's rebate so we do not pay more than our fair share.
• Press for legislation to provide greater transparency, access to documents and freedom of information in relation
to EU institutions.

CANVASSERS’ BRIEFING
NOTE - UKIP
• The only way we are going to get a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is if there is
a big Conservative vote on 4th June. If the anti-Labour vote is split between lots of
parties, Gordon Brown won’t feel any pressure to concede. We are the only party
making campaigning for a referendum on Lisbon the centre-piece of the campaign.
• UKIP are in no position to pose as the anti-sleaze party. Of the 12 MEPs they got
elected in 2004, one (Ashley Mote, South East) has been found guilty of fraud and
another (Tom Wise, Eastern region) has been charged with money laundering and
will stand trial later this year.
• UKIP are asking people to 'lend them their vote' but that's what they said last time
- and what have they actually achieved? They spent the first two years squabbling
amongst themselves about who should be leader and, since then, they have failed
to support British business, farmers or fishermen in key votes in Europe. For
example, they voted against efforts to create a Single Market ‘level playing field’
for British companies in Europe; they voted against guarantees for brand name
protection for British produce; and they voted to allow French and Spanish trawlers
into a restricted British marine conservation area.
• You can't trust UKIP to do what they say. For example, last time they stood on a
pledge of opposing enlargement of the EU and allowing people from Central and
Eastern Europe to come to Britain. But then it turned out that their leader, Roger
Knapman, had been using Polish workers to renovate his house.
• Robert Kilroy Silk, who fronted their campaign last time, walked away from them
because he said they were 'joke' and he was 'embarrassed by their stupidity'
• On the broader issue of our relationship with the EU, MEPs cannot determine
whether the EU has more or less powers - only Governments can do that and a
strong, solid Conservative vote in this election makes the possibility of an early
General Election and a Conservative Government more likely. We are the only
Party that is likely to form a Government that is opposed to giving more power to
Brussels and actually getting some back.
