Extraordinary to find such a degree of consensus and lack of
solidarity across the board!

Low public support for saving Vauxhall

Lord Mandelson has given assurances over Vauxhall's future
Only a third of voters are in favour of using public money to bail
out the car manufacturer With fears growing over Vauxhall’s future
as its parent company GM Europe struggles to find a buyer, the latest
PoliticsHome research reveals that only a third of voters support
using public money to rescue the beleaguered company.

A new PoliticsHome poll of 1158 UK voters has found that fifty per
cent of the public oppose using public money to rescue Vauxhall, with
thirty three per cent supporting this idea.

Conservative supporters were most strongly opposed bailing out
Vauxhall (by a majority of fifty six per cent) but the trend against
using public funds was the same across supporters of all parties and
none.

Even Labour supporters – traditionally most in favour of state
intervention in industry – opposed a bailout by a margin of forty
two to thirty nine.

There are currently concerns that jobs could be lost at Vauxhall
after its parent company, GM Europe, struggles to find a buyer in
Germany. Including suppliers the total number of jobs that could be
affected is estimated to be 15,000 to 20,000. Do you think the UK
government should, or should not, use public money to rescue Vauxhall?

PoliticsHome interviewed 1158 adults by email between 28 and 29 May
2009. Results are weighted by party ID to reflect the UK at large.
