Senior Scottish Labour MPs began a desperate — and unsuccessful —
last-minute attempt to avert a by-election in Glasgow that may prove
politically fatal for Gordon Brown.

In a surreal day of claim and counter-claim, friends of Michael Martin,
the outgoing Speaker, said that he was not standing down as an MP when
he leaves the Speaker’s chair on June 21.

The briefing appeared to be an indication of Labour’s fear of the
consequences of a summer by-election in Glasgow North East, which some
MPs believe could result in a meltdown that unseats the Prime Minister.
