Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s controversial foreign minister, arrived in Rome on Sunday for the first of a series of meetings with European leaders aimed at calming the recent tensions between the European Union and the new Israeli government.

The trip, Mr Lieberman’s first visit to Europe as foreign minister, is followed with some degree of nervousness among both Israeli and European diplomats. Mr Lieberman, the leader of the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party, is a hawkish politician whose record of making provocative and inflammatory statements has already cost Israel valuable diplomatic capital.
