Lt. Col. Shawn M. PineFreeman Center Military / Strategic AnalystShawn Pine recently returned from Israel where he was a Ph.D. candidate in international relations at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He received a Master of Arts degree in Middle Eastern studies from the University of Texas at Austin and holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University. Prior to attending Georgetown University, he served three years in the Golani Brigade of Israeli Defense Forces. He completed nine years active duty as an officer in the United States Army and served in a myriad of positions including: serving with the Multinational Force and Observers mission in Sinai, Egypt, commanding a mountain training camp at Fort Lewis, Washington, and serving as detachment commander of the Fort Sam Houston Counterintelligence detachment, San Antonio, Texas. He is currently serving as a counterintelligence officer in a Military Intelligence unit located in Austin, Texas. He has published a number of articles concerning the prevailing political, military, and strategic environment in the Middle East. In addition to THE MACCABEAN, his works have appeared in Israel Affairs, The International Journal of Intelligence and Counterintelligence, The Jerusalem Post, and Nativ. Most recently, he contributed an article to the recently published work 'From Rabin to Netanyahu: Israel's Troubled Agenda.' His research and writing were brilliant, always expressing the harsh realities in the Middle East. Pine was recently killed working as a military contractor for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.
