NEWNATIONS BULLETIN 05 MAY 2009

RESTRUCTURING THE UN

We say the UN should be restructured to meet the needs of the 21st Century. That the G20 should become part of the UN and largely replace the UN Security Council.
G20, now an established forum, can be seen to be a much more relevant and representative body than the UNSC.

We compare how some major nations are interpreting the call to stimulate their own, and the world economy.

There is a warning, which we repeat, that the mood in US financial circles is turning against the reform of the financial markets, expecting that 'Business as usual' is just around the corner. Obscene or what?

We hope for the long overdue thaw in US-Cuban relations - similarly that the prolonged spat with Venezuela may be coming to an end.

NORTH KOREA, in our view the 'Brat' amongst nations, is scrutinised.

We examine the implications of the upsurge of suicide bombings in IRAQ. The problems here will not conveniently go away to make space for engagement in the Afghan crisis. Potentially a terrible outcome is still possible.

AFGHANISTAN itself is scrutinised and the prospects look dire, notwithstanding the expected reinforcement of ground troops. It is being forcefully pointed out that the standard of living of survival and security, for poor Kabul residents, is less than that under the Taleban, who seem to be awaited, not only with resignation but now with a hope for improvement

PAKISTAN may now represent just the most potentially dangerous situation anywhere in the world, as Secretary of State Clinton is suggesting! We explain the sad story.

IRAN is coming up for its elections in June, flawed by priestly interference with the elective process. We look at the current presidential candidates.

We review the anti-Shia process in SAUDI ARABIA, and the fears of the Sunni Arab States about the US, moving towards improving relations with IRAN.

In SYRIA we are looking at a probable Hezbollah victory in neighboring Lebanon. What happened?

SOUTH AFRICA - Party politics trumps the law. What a disappointment for democracy in Africa!

AZERBAIJAN is getting cosy with RUSSIA. The pendulum of influencing central Asia and the Caucasus seems to be swinging RUSSIA's way.

NATO quietly enlarged on the eve of the G20. We report the reactions amongst citizens of the new members, ALBANIA AND CROATIA

We take a look at TAIWAN and THE PHILIPPINES and how they are reacting to the Global Crisis.

....And more
