Khost after Taliban attack
Taliban launched massive suicide bombing attacks Tuesday, May 12, on two government buildings in the eastern Afghanistan town of Khost which houses a big American base near the border with Pakistan. US forces responded, sparking running gun battles that killed an estimated 20 people and wounded three US troops. According to some reports, the Taliban's assault was planned to ambush the responding US forces.

Roxana Saberi's release part of US-Iran swap?
According to DEBKAfile's intelligence sources from Iran, the release of US journalist Roxana Saberi Tuesday, May 12, was part of an exchange deal under which Washington agreed to free four senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards intelligence officers captured in Irbil, northern Iraq in January 2007. Defined as "diplomats" by Tehran, they ran terror operations and covert arms supplies from Iran then to al Qaeda and Sunni insurgent networks.

Six hundred Egyptian commandos are deployed in northern Sinai and divided Rafah for Cairo's first serious effort ever to cork up the hundreds of Hamas' arms smuggling mega-tunnels into the Gaza Strip, DEBKAfile's military sources reveal.
"If Cairo had done this three years ago," said as a high-ranking Israeli officer, "Iran might never have been able to move in on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip or spread its wings across into Egypt territory.

Israeli and Egyptian leaders at Sharm el Sheikh
The White House has set dates for president Hosni Mubarak to hold talks with US President Barack Obama on May 26, eight days after the Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu's May 18 visit. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will round out the Middle East cycle on May 28.
Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday, May 12, that the president will discuss "the steps all parties should take to help achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians and between Israel and the Arab states." However, DEBKAfile reports that Iran has takes the lead in the Israeli-Egyptian agenda.
