Specter's party switch has left Republicans with mixed feelings; rage that
he is probably handing the Democrats a filibuster-proof Senate at this
critical political juncture and relief that they're rid of a RINO
(Republican In Name Only) who has often been at odds with the majority of
Republicans on crucial issues.
Some think the lesson of Specter's defection is that the Republicans need to
become more moderate. But "moderate" isn't the issue. Read Hudgins's
argument

Specter might have been a moderate Republican but he did hold some
limited-government Republican views that put him at odds with Democrats. Now
he carries those views to the Democratic Party.
William Thomas asks<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102568175537&s=14360&e=001G0ahUZ_kDp9L3fbc_URiMH6gykIYbUmaOh0M_z2lhNCuzZJs5XFxOoddox7f2QM9x7GfV-f3B9R6C7io6gqd-4vUcypTTABuOWBedE6AHRG8mky_TAmrSRhxeDYjCHEBEAw_TR7weFQi_49lVevJ5Oq0h0gKwcCdcWdSJmxkXMA=>,
if "moderate" Republicans could marry a pro-business, traditionalist
ideology with noblesse oblige, economic regulation, and growing entitlement
programs, why can't economically literate Democrats wed their own
paternalism and egalitarianism to a recognition that bureaucracies are
inefficient, taxes aren't donations, and regulations restrict individual
autonomy?

In his 2006 book *The Elephant in the Room: Evangelicals, Libertarians, and
the Battle to Control the Republican Party*, Ryan Sager discusses the
importance of as well as conflicts between two factions in the Republican
Party. But Bidinotto

is cracking up.

Just before the Republican loss of Congress in the 2006 election, Hudgins
warned what the results would be of the GOP's drift from the limited
government, pro-freedom philosophy of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan to
the "compassionate conservative," and "me-too" big spending policies of
George W. Bush. Hudgins called

Brad tells us that, "As Congress returns from spring recess and gets to work
hammering out a health care reform bill, that dreaded statistic is in the
news again: 46 million Americans have no health insurance. Like many scary
numbers the press serves up every day, this one needs to be examined with a
skeptical eye. In reality, the situation is not quite as bad as it is made
to appear."
