| Combating the EMP Threat, Part Two by Brigitte Gabriel Dear Harold, The advance of the Taliban in Pakistan means at least some of that country’s nuclear weapons could fall into the hands of Islamist extremists at some point. It may not happen — but what if it does? The clear message from Iran’s leaders is that it is not going to stop its plutonium enrichment program, and various intelligence sources now project it will successfully develop nuclear weapons within two years. What’s more, Iran is working with North Korea to both advance Iran’s nuclear weapons program and develop the missile launching technology necessary to deliver and deploy such weapons for maximum effect. If Iran is not stopped, not only will it have nuclear weapons, it’s virtually certain its leaders will share its technology with selected terrorist organizations. These are the chilling realities of 21st century nuclear proliferation. As Guy Rodgers and I have been telling you over the past week, what really makes this nuclear proliferation a terrifying threat is the potential our enemies have to use nuclear weapons to trigger an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. An EMP attack gives a country like Iran greatly increased destructive power far out of proportion to the number of nuclear weapons it has. The good news is we aren’t helpless in the face of this very real and frightening threat. We can take action to protect ourselves. There are solutions that will work. This is why we’re making such a determined effort to educate you about an EMP attack, as well as what each of us can do to help make sure it never, ever happens! One nuclear weapon or “dirty bomb” detonated in a major U.S. city would kill hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps more. But, as the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack (http://empcommission.org) has noted, just one nuclear warhead, optimally deployed above our atmosphere, could likely trigger an EMP attack that would knock out as much as 70% of our country’s electrical power grid. And not just for a few days, but for months or longer. Imagine the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina spread nationwide, with no one available to come with help. As I said yesterday, any terrorist attack is horrific. An EMP attack would be apocalyptic. Millions and millions of people would die. This is not my conclusion, but the conclusion of the experts who have studied this. We can successfully defend ourselves against this threat, and not at a cost of trillions of dollars, or even hundreds of billions of dollars. For instance, according to experts in the field, some of whom we have talked to, we could achieve a high level of protection of the key parts of our power grid for as little as $20 billion. Given the size of our federal budget and the money being spent on “stimulus” packages and “bailouts,” $20 billion – to help ensure the survival of our way of life – is peanuts! But what we currently lack, which is needed to get anything significant done in Washington, is (1) sufficient national awareness of the threat, and (2) the political will to take the necessary steps to address it. To combat this lack of awareness and political will, ACT! for America is launching a long-term strategic plan that will consist of a combination of public relations, grassroots action, and lobbying efforts. It’s clear to us that simply supporting one bill in Congress is not enough. This will not be a quick fix. Here then, are the initial pieces of our plan to combat the EMP threat.
