Conservatives back at 40% in new YouGov poll

A YouGov poll for today's People newspaper sees the Tory lead increase to 16%, with the party again hitting the psychologically important 40% rating.

Comparisons are with the YouGov poll published in Friday's Telegraph.

DAVID CAMERON HEADING FOR ELECTION LANDSLIDE
THE PEOPLE poll predicts 137 majority for Tories

Tory leader David Cameron is heading for a landslide majority of 137 in the next General Election, according to a poll by The People today.

And Premier Gordon Brown takes another one point tumble on the eve of his Government relaunch. The PM is praying that the unveiling of his "Building Britain's Future" policy blitz tomorrow will revive his fortunes.

But an exclusive YouGov survey for The People shows he DROPPED in public opinion last week.

Our poll puts the Tories up two points to 40 per cent with Labour trailing 16 points on 24 and the Lib Dems on 17 per cent.

If that is repeated at the General Election Mr Cameron will waltz into No.10 with 378 MPs against 199 Labour and 42 Lib Dems.

And Cabinet ministers Alistair Darling, Jack Straw and Ben Bradshaw would lose their seats.

The PM's new policy blitz includes more apprenticeships for school-leavers, a major house-building programme and more cash for struggling industries.

Schools will no longer be compelled to have daily numeracy and literacy lessons. And cancer patients must be seen for treatment within two weeks of being diagnosed. If they are not the NHS must pay for them to go into a private hospital.

But the plans haven't stopped Labour bigwigs abandoning the sinking ship.  The latest is former Health Secretary Alan Milburn who yesterday announced he is to quit as MP for Darlington.
