European funding helps the North West to flourish

Europe Minister Glenys Kinnock visited Preston and Blackpool to see how EU funding is giving people and businesses in the North West a boost.

From Blackpool’s new all-weather beach, to business development in Preston, EU investment in the regional economy is helping the North West to make the best of the economic downturn.

During her visit, Baroness Kinnock met people from across the region who have grown their businesses or got back into work with support from European regional funding.

Glenys Kinnock said:

"People sometimes wonder what being in the EU means, where the benefits are – and they’re right here, on their doorstep. Today I’m looking forward to finding out how Europe is helping people in the North West, helping families, helping businesses, and – of course – also helping to keep the Great British seaside holiday alive.

"With more British holiday makers discovering the attractions on their doorstep, the North West has a real opportunity to show that it’s a great destination for a ‘staycation’. I’m delighted to open this new beach on Blackpool promenade, which I’m sure will be a welcome addition to the world-famous seafront.

"I’m really pleased that EU funding is helping people in the North West to realise their ambitions, whether it’s getting back into work or education, or launching a new business."

Baroness Kinnock also commented on the benefits of EU membership to Preston and Blackpool during an interview with BBC Radio Lancashire.
