Labour tops the table for party earnings in 2008



The Labour party received more income than any of the other poliical parties in 2008, the latest figures have shown.

The findings, from the Electoral Commission, showed the party earned just around £34m, while the Conservatives received over £32m.

The figures will come as a surprise given widespread reports of top donors, expecting a Labour defeat at the general election, deserting the party or switching allegiance to the Tories.

However despite the higher earnings Labour did not outspend the Tories, whose expenditure was nearly £5m more.
