Most Katif Expellees Can’t Build Homes

Reported: 14:25 PM - Jul/07/09     http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/167587

(IsraelNN.com) 60 percent of the families expelled from Gush Katif in 2005 will not be able to build a new home for themselves, the Head of the Hof Ashkelon Local Authority, Yair Farjoun, said in a conference marking the fourth anniversary of the Expulsion.

Farjoun explained that while the families have plots to build on, they have had to sustain themselves off of the compensation money over the last four years and do not have enough left to build homes with. “The meaning of this is that Nitzan will turn into a permanent transition camp in which the next generation will grow also,” he said.

30 percent of the expellees are still unemployed, he said. As for the percentage that requires assistance from the welfare authorities – he said that he “dares not” give the number because “the reality is too difficult.”
