LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT!!

SUPPORT AMENDMENT #1628
TO THE
THE NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT

SEND A MESSAGE TO IRAN!

by Lisa Piraneo, Director of Government Relations

Dear Harold,

President Obama has warned that “Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon would not only be a threat to Israel and a threat to the United States, but would be profoundly destabilizing in the international community as a whole and could set off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East that would be extraordinarily dangerous for all concerned, including for Iran.”

Over the years, Iran has received numerous international warnings to “cease and desist” its participation in unlawful nuclear activities, as well as its development of unconventional weapons and support for international terrorism.

Unfortunately, such warnings have fallen on deaf ears. Despite sanctions imposed by the U.N. Security Council aimed at convincing Iran to stop its unlawful activities and comply with the requirements of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and despite sanctions imposed by the U.S. Treasury Department on several Iranian banks for their involvement in proliferation activities and terrorism support, Iran continues on its current and dangerous course.

Amendment #1628 to S. 1390, the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010, addresses this issue in a direct way by expressing the Sense of the Senate that the government of Iran should:

  1. Seize the historic offer put forward by President Barack Obama to engage in direct diplomacy with the United States;

  2. Suspend all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, including research and development, and work on all heavy-water related projects, including the construction of a research reactor moderated by heavy water, as demanded by multiple resolutions of the United Nations Security Council; and

  3. Come into full compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, including the additional protocol to the Treaty.
Further, Amendment #1628 asserts that President Obama should impose sanctions, including those on the Central Bank of Iran (as well as any other Iranian banks involved in proliferation activities or terrorist support), if…

  1. Iran has not accepted the U.S. offer to engage in direct diplomacy via the P5-plus-1 process before the Summit of the Group of 20 in September, 2009, and has not suspended all of its enrichment-related and reprocessing activities and work on all heavy-water related projects; within 60 days of the summit’s conclusion, and

  2. The U.N. Security Council has not adopted significant additional sanctions on the government of Iran.
We need to assert some “tough talk” – coupled with hard deadlines – in addition to the Obama administration’s current course of soft diplomacy. This amendment is a good first step.
THE FOLLOWING ACTION IS NEEDED FROM YOU, OUR ACT!
FOR
AMERICA GRASSROOTS ADVOCATE!

The amendment is expected to be considered sometime today. Please take a moment RIGHT NOW to call your elected official in the U.S. SENATE. [Click here to locate your Senator] and urge him/her to support the Kyl/Lieberman amendment #1628 to S. 1390, the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010.

We need to send a strong message to Iran that their destructive behavior will not be tolerated — and will have consequences!

REMEMBER, YOUR VOICE COUNTS!
