India raids food hoarders as prices soar

India has launched countrywide raids on food commodities hoarders as the government appealed on Thursday to consumers not to panic about shortages inflicted by a poor monsoon.

State authorities have conducted sweeping raids in the past days in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat in an attempt to release foodstuffs onto the market and cool surging prices.
